Chiang Mai International Airport announced the cancellation of 108 flights and the rescheduling of another 80 during the Yi Peng festival, amid expectations of over 200,000 lanterns in the sky that could compromise aviation safety.
The airport director, Group Captain Sakan Udon, stated on Tuesday (November 3) that airlines adjusted their schedules between November 21 and 28 to accommodate the restrictions related to Yi Peng and Loy Krathong, celebrated on November 24 and 25. During this eight-day period, 105 special flights are also expected.
The flight restrictions will be in effect on November 24 from 10 AM to 12 PM and on November 24 and 25 from 7 PM to 1 AM the following day. As a result, the airport's daily operating window will decrease from about 20 hours to 12 hours.

Despite fewer hours of operation, the terminal expects an average of 210 flights per day during the festival — potentially reaching 232, about 10% above normal — which could lead to congestion in the terminal during peak times. Officials have already alerted pilots and increased runway inspections for lanterns and foreign objects.
Sakan urged residents and organizers to respect the red zones, especially along takeoff and landing routes, and advised passengers to check their schedules with airlines and arrive early. According to the airport, the goal is to maintain the Lanna tradition without compromising aviation safety.
